HIMSS16 Recap

What happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas when you gather almost 42,000 health IT professionals, clinicians, executives and vendors from around the world.

This year at HIMSS, we saw common themes of cybersecurity, interoperability and EHRs.

IDC predicts that one in three health records will be compromised in 2016. This startling statistic explains why the topic of cybersecurity was so prevalent during the show. There has been an increase in data breaches and cyber-attacks since there is more electronic data than ever. Cybersecurity is becoming a main focus and now being recognized as a concern and priority for healthcare data.

There has also been an increased focus and emphasis on the important of healthcare data interoperability and integration. Everyone is looking for a simple and secure way to transfer patients records from one provider to another or between providers and patients.

2016 will also be a big year for innovations in EHR technologies as more EHRs will be on the cloud. Industries (including healthcare) are more inclined to make the switch to software applications of the cloud. This change will make EHRs more mobile friendly and clinicians can access EHRs from mobile devices instead of just computer screens.

ETHERFAX in the News

One of our big announcements at HIMSS this year was our partnership with DataMotion offering fax-to-direct. We also announced our integration with Xerox. We demonstrated the new technology at our booth (#12247) and DataMotion’s (#12144). Our combined technology expands the connected reach of Direct Messaging to providers using fax technology to exchange patient information with healthcare providers, patients, business associates and clinical systems. This announcement was featured on Healthcare IT News.

HIMSS16 in Review

The vibe could definitely be described as exciting. With Peyton Manning as one of the keynote speakers coupled with the excitement of Vegas, people were certainly thrilled to be at the show. We were able to speak with many customers and vendors and they were amazed with ETHERFAX’s ability to send high resolution faxes at incredible speeds. As mentioned earlier, we were able to demo this at the show on Tuesday (March 1) and even had a purchase order from a company the following day. DataMotion showcased their ability to send Direct to Fax and vice versa. At our booth, we showcased the Xerox integration with number validation.

An important lesson we learned is that fax is not going anywhere any time soon. Many people we met with spoke about how despite initiatives, fax still remains the main means of securely communicating PHI. There will always be the need to send unstructured data securely, and ETHERFAX is at the forefront and continues to redefine fax as we know it. Eventually we plan to get into both Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and create extended data repository (XDR) connections to many of the EMR and Health Internet Service Providers (HISPs).

ETHERFAX will absolutely be at next year’s HIMSS 2017 with an even bigger booth. We look forward to seeing you all in Orlando!
