AT&T and Verizon Push for 90 Day Copper Retirement Notices to Expedite Transition to New Technologies

Aug 03, 2017

The nation’s two largest telcos, AT&T and Verizon, are once again making their case to the FCC to shorten the copper retirement notice from 180 to 90 days. Modifying the notices of copper retirement would make it easier for service providers to effectively transition customers to newer technologies such as fiber-based facilities and IP-based fax.

During a recent FCC meeting, the regulator expressed its desire to reform the copper retirement process and achieve the following goals:

  • Ease the transition to IP networks
  • Streamline network notification rules
  • Eliminate rules that require service providers to dedicate capital to maintain TDM equipment
  • Speed up the legacy service discontinuance process

ETHERFAX knows just how critical it is for businesses to replace legacy fax systems with next-generation networks and offers a solution to ensure a seamless transition to IP-based fax infrastructure. The ETHERFAX Next Generation Analog-to-ETHERFAX (A2E) device easily extends existing fax infrastructure to the ETHERFAX network in the cloud.

How it Works

The analog telephony adapter connects fax machines to the ETHERFAX network, allowing them to operate as if they were on a traditional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). As a plug-and-play device, the ETHERFAX Next Generation A2E is transparent to users and no training is necessary after implementation.

To ensure the secure delivery of unstructured data, organizations can create a private fax network through the ETHERFAX Secure Exchange Network (SEN). ETHERFAX SEN is the world’s largest ecosystem, leveraging military-grade encryption and hybrid cloud technology to provide 100% secure communications.

Unlike any other device, the ETHERFAX Next Generation A2E handles multiple inbound calls simultaneously and never experiences a busy signal. As ETHERFAX leverages a vast array of virtual ports, high volumes of fax transmissions can be securely sent and received within seconds.

In addition to reducing IT complexity, the ETHERFAX Next Generation A2E device also eliminates recurring costs that are associated with traditional fax lines. With IP-based fax, there is no need to purchase additional fax boards, and organizations only pay for faxes sent and received through ETHERFAX.

While we wait to hear the FCC’s decision on copper retirement notices, we encourage you to migrate to new technologies. Extending existing fax infrastructure to the cloud will enable secure document delivery for all your business-critical operations.
