Community Health Systems Data Breach Further Signifies Healthcare Vulnerabilities

Aug 20, 2014

Unknown vulnerabilities in healthcare IT infrastructure still plague many organizations, as shown by the 4.5 million Healthcare records stolen from Community Health Systems this week in a major data breach across 206 hospitals in the United States. Sensitive information such as social security numbers, physical addresses, birthdays and telephone numbers have been compromised, leaving their patients at a heightened risk of identity fraud.

This most recent incident illustrates the monumental damage that can be done by a healthcare data breach and why security is still a serious concern for healthcare organizations across the country. As a healthcare organization, it’s important to understand just how secure your data is, whether or not you’re HIPAA compliant and what steps you can take to ensure the security of your patients. Security measures such as sending PHI information through unsecured networks like an unencrypted t.38 still have the potential to be compromised.

ETHERFAX provides a HIPAA-compliant fax solution for healthcare organizations to ensure secure data transport. Fax remains a critical component of secure communications in the healthcare industry and ETHERFAX helps organizations integrate with existing EMRs, applications and processes. Under military-grade encryption, information transported via our network is never stored off-site, remaining safe within your fax server or other integrated applications.

Our upcoming release of ETHERFAX SEN will further help healthcare organization maintain security standards by providing the ability to route documents to other ETHERFAX peers within the ETHERFAX network without ever traversing an external telephone network.
